Camp program: At The International School of Charlottesville we introduce the second language as a natural language of communication. Although the children have specific 'language lessons', they learn mostly through communication with their teachers. The teachers speak primarily in the target language, and even beginners who have never been exposed to it quickly feel comfortable. The spoken language is always reinforced with visual aids (gestures, facial expressions, pictures etc.) and it is communication-based. Although we introduce written language in a global approach, emphasis is always on oral language.
During their morning at our camp the children learn songs, expressions, greetings, colors, and topic-specific vocabulary. The children have a choice of activities: art, pretend play, water play, outdoor play and games, story time, listening, and computer games are just a few examples. During each session, the teachers choose specific themes which allow them to introduce basic vocabulary, and cultural elements. Examples of past themes include the circus, pirates, dinosaurs, Mexico, Canada and Costa Rica.
The extended care program provides a safe, relaxed environment for the children, with opportunities for structured and unstructured activities, with an emphasis on creative and outdoor programs.
